The spinal cord is the main pathway of communication between the brain and the rest of the body. It is a tube like structure of nerves that are protected by the bones of the vertabrae...

Nerves enter and exit along it entire length through small openings in the vertabrae.

Body functions can be totally or partially destroyed in any body part below the level of the injury. The outcomes of such an injury could be bowel or urinary incontinence, atrophy of muscles, staggering and even spondylitis from crushing damage.

Car accidents, racing and working dog accidents are likely ways for such trauma to occur.
