Septicaemia is now more likely to be called Sepsis and is an overload of bacteria in the blood stream resulting from infection in another part of the body such as the abdomen, urinary tract or the skin. It can also result from surgery in these same areas.
Signs of septicaemia usually start with a high fever then can progress to
- Shaking
- Chills
- Weakness
- Nausea
- Vomitting
- Diarrhea.
Sepsis can also cause further infection in the brain (meningitis) or the heart (pericarditis). Sepsis must be treated quickly as risk from death is high.
