Kidney infections in dogs - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

Kidney infections, known as pyelonephritis, can be very painful and could be life-threatening for your dog. It is caused by a bacterial infection that moves the bladder up the ureters (the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder)...

The dog’s urinary system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, one bladder and one urethra.

The two most common bacterial causes are Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus spp. Other bacteria which may lead to pyelonephritis include Proteus, Streptococcus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Pseudomonas spp., which commonly infect the lower urinary tract, but which may ascend into the cat's upper urinary tract (1).

Symptoms of a kidney infection:

  • Drinking more water
  • Urinating more
  • Painful when urinating or when you touch near the kidneys
  • Frequently urinating small amounts
  • Urinating in the house or other inappropriate locations
  • Fever

Kidney weakness shows in loss of condition and appetite, loss of interest and a certain dullness, possible intermittent vomiting, and/or thirstiness. What is really involved is the interdependent health of the adrenal glands and the kidneys.

McDowells Recommendation

I have a great deal of experience with kidney and urinary tract problems in dogs and have several articles on the subject describing what you can do yourself and what I can send to you to support your dogs recovery.

We advise you start a convalescent diet consisting of only one meal a day and this to be raw chicken necks including the bones. We must unload the kidneys and to do this we need to get rid of all processed feed so your dog's immunity and metabolism may be completely focused on healing and clearing toxins from the system.

I also recommend that you place your dog there after on a raw diet of raw meat & bones i.e. beef/mutton bones with meat on them or raw chicken necks and wings, mince, definitely no processed food and snacks. You can also add some freshly cooked vegetables and rice as well. If your dog is not already on this type of diet, then I suggest that you introduce it slowly.

McDowells Products

Herbs known to prevent urinary tract disorders have been used for thousands of years- Many of these Herbs, like Rosehips and Bearberry (Uva Ursi) having been recorded as being used by the ancient Chinese Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Indian civilisations.

Clinical signs of chronic renal failure are not usually apparent until three quarters of the total number of nephrons have been destroyed, so the process may continue over many years and therefore damage may be quite advanced when all becomes known.

Animal Botanical ™ Kidney formulation contains some of the most reliable and traditionally used urinary tract herbs. In our clinic many clients have reported improvement of blood urea and creatinine in many cases of Kidney damage in both canine and felines.
