The plum is every bit as healthy for you as the blueberry. Everyone seems to think of the blueberry as the ultimate fruit, rich in antioxidants. But if you're looking for a cheaper option in these credit-crunch times, try the plum, say researchers.

They are juicy and delicious fruit, with 2000 varieties, that belong to the genus Prunus of the Rosaceae family which also includes peaches, apricots, and nectarines.

They reckon the plum has almost all the health-giving qualities of the blueberry, and for far less money.
Researchers at AgriLife Research in Texas tested more than a hundred varieties of plums, peaches and nectarines for their levels of antioxidants and phytonutrients, and discovered that the plum contains as many antioxidants as the blueberry. Other stone fruits, such as the peach and nectarine, were equally as health-giving. (Source: Texas A&M AgriLife, February 4, 2009).

The health benefits of plums include relief from indigestion, influenza infections, and anxiety-related problems. The antioxidant power of these fruits helps in treating osteoporosis, macular degeneration, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. They also help in maintaining a healthy heart by reducing cholesterol levels. Additionally, plums improve cognition, boost immunity, improve cellular health, maintain electrolyte balance, keep the nervous system healthy, and aid in skin care and blood clotting.
