Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus). It is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime1...
Uterine leiomyomas, better known as uterine fibroids, are benign smooth muscle tumours of the uterus. As the most common tumour found in the female reproductive system, uterine fibroids are seen in 20-25% of all women and are estimated to occur in 40% of menstruating females older than 50 years.
Uterine fibroids can be seen at any time between menarche and menopause but most commonly occur in those aged 35-49 years. They typically resolve after menopause.
There are three main types of fibroids1:
- Subserosal fibroids
- Intramural fibroids
- Submucosal fibroids
Most women with fibroids will experience no symptoms at all. If there are large or numerous fibroids can cause the following symptoms1:
- Heavy or prolonged periods
- Bleeding between periods
- Pelvic pain and pressure
- Frequent urination
- Low back pain
- Pain during intercourse
- Difficulty getting pregnant
A spiritual connection
Fibroids can be seen from several different levels, from the energetic point of view they can be seen either as:
- Non acceptance of relationship (self or others) issues
- As a result of a possible sexual violation of some sort not necessarily physical.
- Resistance to bearing children or an anxiety about bearing children.
This is really why the old adage about having a child to resolve fibroids makes a lot of sense. Not only does having a child often result in changes in the above three things but hormonal changes which come about as a result of the above are able to be rebalanced through the cycle of pregnancy and birthing.
