We've had lots of questions about our hemp products since we launched them and we wanted to address some questions, concerns and enquiries!
Q: Is eating hemp a new health fad?
A: Hemp has been grown for centuries and has a range of uses, including as clothes, paper, rope, food, and even as an industrial building block. In fact, records show that hemp is one of the first plants domesticated by humans! Hemp seeds can be eaten raw, ground into a meal, sprouted or made into dried powder. They can also be made into a liquid and used for baking or for beverages such as hemp milk and tisanes. Hemp oil is cold-pressed from the seed and the leaves of the hemp plant can also be consumed raw as leafy vegetables in salads, and pressed to make green juice.
Q: Is hemp legal??
A: Yes! Hemp is not the same as marijuana. The sale of hemp seed foods was prohibited in Australia until 12 November 2017, when amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (Food Standards Code) legally permitted their retail sale. Hemp, unlike marijuana, contains a almost no amount of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the compound that gets you 'high'.
Q: What makes hemp so good for health?
A: Where do we start!? For at least the last 12,000 years hemp has been grown and processed for it’s fibres and food products. Hemp seeds have a rich nutrition profile. They contain high levels of antioxidants, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. The shells add fiber to the diet, and grinding the seeds helps the body to absorb more of the other nutrients.
The seeds are full of nutritious compounds, including:
- Protein
- Unsaturated fats
- Fiber
- Minerals and vitamins - vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, iron, zinc, B6, among others
Q: How is hemp grown?
A: Hemp grows well in most areas except in extreme desert conditions and high mountain areas. It is an annual broadleaf plant with a taproot and is capable of very rapid growth under ideal growing conditions (it is one of the fastest growing plants!). Fibre hemp plants will grow to 2-4 meters tall. Hemp requires less water, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer than many other crops and has therefor gained a following as a 'sustainable' crop.
Q: How should I feed it to my pets?
A: We've packaged our GMO-free, certified organic hemp products so you can easily store it and feed your pets the right amount!
Q: Will it get my pet high!?
A: No, it wont. Our Hemp seed oil contains CBD and THC within the legal limit in Australia which is:
The total cannabidiol (CBD) content of the hemp seed oil is 0.0075% (75mg/kg) or less, and
The total tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of the oil is 0.005% (50mg/kg) or less.
Cannabis oil is a restricted product in Australia requiring a licensed doctor’s prescription.
