Plantar fasciitis is a condition involving the thick band of tissue (also called a fascia) along the bottom of your feet. It runs from your heel to your toes and is used during walking and all foot movement. It is the inflammation of this tissue that causes the pain...
The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is heel pain and treatment usually does not require surgery.
Firstly, it's important to consider the causal factors;
- Tighter calf muscles that make it difficult to flex your foot and bring your toes up toward your shin
- A very high arch
- Repetitive impact activity (running/sports)
- New or increased activity
This can easily turn into a chronic condition for the effected foot but also be indicated in causing problems with the unaffected leg due to the way it changes stride & feet placement when walking.
If you are overweight then address dietary and exercise changes. If the pain is sport-related then rest and stretching as well as rehabilitation exercises are required. Try some basic yoga! Look at footwear and its affect on condition the also. NO stilettos for a while!
Exercise therapy suggestions
If you haven't addressed exercises then discuss with your physiotherapist and do a quick search for helpful exercises. These may include;
- The Tennis Ball Roll
- The Towel Stretch
- The Toe Stretch
- Toe Curls
