Hemangiosarcoma is a very aggressive, high-grade soft tissue sarcoma with the most common areas affected being the spleen and heart. A highly malignant cancer which preys on blood vessels, it can spread rapidly, causing tumors almost anywhere in the body. Hemangiosarcoma attempts to build it's own blood vessel network, making blood blister like formations which disrupts normal organ function. It is commonly in the advanced stage before detection. Hemangiosarcoma is a common and deadly cancer of dogs.
Hemangiosarcoma is becoming much more common in companion dogs nowadays and affects mostly older, large breed dogs. Males tend to have a higher rate of diagnosis than females, with German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers more affected than other breeds (although no breed is exempt). Hemangiosarcoma arises in sites with a rich blood supply.
While there is little evidence that meets modern scientific standards, increasing numbers of practitioners (alternative and orthodox veterinary) believe that changed diet and feeding practices, environmental pollution and significantly reduced activity levels correlate strongly with the increased incidence of canine cancers.
Unfortunately, no symptoms are classic for hemangiosarcoma other than sudden, profound, internal bleeding. Other clinical signs sometimes seen include:
- Intermittent lethargy or fatigue
- Panting
- Sudden collapse
- Sudden unexplained death
Dogs systems are called upon to digest far too much processed food, since the advent of commercial dog feed in the 1950's. Also, their evolutionary eating pattern has been subverted by over-feeding, which does not allow for periods of fasting which had enabled their metabolism to clear toxins from their systems. In addition to this, the domesticated dog is almost never allowed to bury and retrieve a meaty bone and many have never had raw meat at all.
McDowell's Herbal dispensary staff suggest a specific Hemangiosarcoma Cancer Support Program, which includes concentrated extracts of; Oats, Elecampane, Wormwood, Yarrow, Nettle, Rue and Red Clover along with appropriate Bach Flower Remedies.
The program, which includes the Hemangiosarcoma Cancer Support Mix and is given in conjunction with a powerful antioxidant extract derived from the bark of the Maritime Pine Tree, Maritime Pine Bark Extract and our Conditioning Mix. Together the three formulas have the potential to slow the growth of the cancer and boost overall health. In addition they can assist in healing localized irritation and inflammation which may have resulted from the cancer.
McDowell's Herbal Hemangiosarcoma Cancer Support Program can be used in conjunction with other alternative medicines or with orthodox medical treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
The important distinction between our Herbal approach and that of traditional medicine is that; here we are aiming to boost the robust health maintenance and disease fighting systems already at work in every dog, not just remove or kill cancerous cells – hoping they don’t return.
We expect noticeable change and reduced symptoms in the first four to six weeks of having your dog on our Herbal program and ask that you submit regular reports to your McDowell's Herbal, clinical Consultant.
