Narcolepsy - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

bwh1.jpg

Narcolepsy is a disabling neurological disorder of sleep regulation that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness. It may be described as an intrusion of the dreaming state of sleep (called REM or rapid eye movement sleep) into the waking state. Symptoms generally begin between the ages of 15 and 30.

Narcolepsy is an uncommon sleep disorder marked by recurring and irrepressible attacks of sleep during normal waking hours. As well it can include; cataplexy a sense of being paralyzed while still conscious, this can happen in response to a sudden emotional reaction; sleep paralysis that can occur just before sleep or on waking which includes a worrying sensation of wanting to move and not being able to; and vivid hallucinations that occur just before sleep or just on waking.

There is no known medical cause, though there does seem to be a genetic predisposition. It is disturbing as well as frightening as it can increase the likelihood of accidents.

These symptoms are not uncommon in young children but true narcolepsy usually begins in healthy adolescents and young adults. My mix includes Mugwort, Hypericum, Nettle, Sage, Maritime Pine Bark and Oats as well as the Bach Flowers Red Chestnut, Mimulus and Aspen.
