Bells Palsy - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

peph1.jpg

Bells Palsy used to be called 'Engine Drivers Disease'

The reason for this is that the driver of the old steam trains would spend a lot of time with one side of their face outside the cabin window, most often in a stream of cold air and Bells Palsy resulted when their facial nerve on that side was chilled and damaged by this practice.

Often it would only happen when the person was otherwise affected by an illness, temperature or infection of some sort and the nerve normally recovered spontaneously. However, repeated instances could permanently damage the nerve and affect control of facial muscles in the same way that a stroke may.

The facial nerve runs down the side of the face in the bones of the skull, just in front of the ear and when this was chilled or affected by inflammation or damage, the muscles that control facial muscles on that side would collapse, and the patient would have difficulty using the muscles of the lips, eyes and face generally.

There is no successful medical treatment for Bells Palsy which I am aware of. However, the herb Hypericum used as an oil to be rubbed along the face over the nerve as well as being included in an internal mix in extract form is very effective indeed.

The mix I make up to support patients presenting with Bells Palsy contains herbal extracts of Hypericum, Elecampane, Equisetum and Saw Palmetto with the Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy and Scleranthus. This is taken internally 3 times daily as prescribed.

For external application I provide 25ml of Hypericum Oil to which is also added the Bach Flower Rescue Remedy.

This program will speedily resolve a case of Bells Palsy and follow-up use over a few months should reduce the likelihood of another attack. Robert McDowell's staff Herbalists can not diagnose your disease or illness.
