Prostate enlargement or 'benign prostatic hyperplasia' - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

Many adult males begin to experience difficulty in passing urine from middle age onward. These difficulties include incomplete emptying, frequency of urges to urinate but not being able to pass much, or spraying urine as if it is coming out under pressure rather than a good strong stream...

The prostate gland is a small gland that sits behind the bladder in men. It is shaped like a walnet and is controlled by powerful sex hormones, including testosterone. The prostate gland can become enlarged - a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.

All these problems arise because the prostate gland which encircles the urethra (the tube from the bladder to the penis) has become engorged and is strangulating the tube. This is very much the same thing as happens after ejaculation where this engorgement is a device to prevent urine passing after sex, so as not to compromise the sperm's viability.

Dietary Recommendations

  • Avoid large amounts of liquids a few hours before sleeping
  • Limit caffeine - it is a diuretic
  • Eat a variety of vegetables
  • Eat nuts - rich in zinc can help balance testosterone and dihydrotestosterone
  • Eat a few servings of fruit daily, and be sure to include citrus fruits. They are high in vitamin C, which may help to protect the prostate gland.

Get regular exercise everyday. Work your way up to moderate to vigorous physical activity and maintain a healthy weight.

A major part of prostate health is ensured by regular sexual activity as the prostate, which provides the fluid ejaculate, benefits from regular emptying. It becomes one of those questions of "use it or lose it". If you dont use it, you also put yourself at a much higher risk of prostate cancer in older age.

McDowells Treatment

Besides advising my prostate patients to do something about regular release, McDowells has a herbal extract mix to promote urinary and bladder health and kidney function in general.

It contains saw palmetto, maritime pine bark, elecampane, celery, juniper, blue flag, phytolacca, cleavers and rosehips to promote urinary and bladder health and kidney function in general.

I also include the Bach Flowers Scleranthus, Wild Oat, Larch and Wild Rose to assist with some of the emotional factors which may be involved and I strongly suggest the regular use of Rosehips tea as the best all round adrenal, kidney and bladder tonic.

We suggest a consultation to ensure you are recieiving the best treatment for your condition.
