"My yearling has been diagnosed as having accelerated bone growth and shortened tendons. His feet are becoming clubby as his short tendons don't allow his heals to touch the ground. He is in good condition and was being fed lucerne/oaten, boiled barley, linseed, millet and bran as well as mudge dolomite, brewers yeast, seaweed and rosehips. I have been told to retard his growth for a while.  What should I be feeding.? Also what are the feeding rates for boiled barley, linseed and millet for horses.? Does this mix heat them up? Thank you for your time"

Answer:-Often this condition is brought about by too rapid gain of weight of the young horse.
Sometimes there is a genetic predisposition. It is usually recommended that protein rich food be eliminated for a while so therefore no grain and no lucerne. Try and get hold of grassy or pasture hay. Keep him on the lean side until he has matured.
I would still feed the 1/4 cup of crushed millet and 1/4cup crushed linseed twice daily for nutritional support of the bones, tendons and ligaments as this is only such a small quantity. Remove all other grain from his diet though. Continue with the dolomite, seaweed, rosehips and Brewers Yeast.
As for feeding rates for your other horses I would strongly recommend that you refer to a respected nutrition book either at the library or by purchasing. Such a book will allow you to figure out how much each individual horse will require and will have equations for figuring out calcium to phosphorous ratios, protein requirements etc.
Each horse is an individual though and one needs to monitor how the horse is going on the diet ie. Is the horse gaining too much weight (then reduce the feed) or not maintaining weight then up the feed. Nothing is set in stone so you be the judge of how your horse looks. These books usually have a diagram whereby they show the different fat scores which are useful.
As a rule horses really do not need grain unless they are poor doers or are doing substantial work. Older horses in winter may need grain supplementation and don't forget rugging as this will cut down on the amount of feed required by conserving body heat and energy.
An important point though is that all horses require sufficient fibre in their diet to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract (GIT) so whether that be pasture or hay or a combination of the two depending on amount of pasture present it should be provided. Lucerne hay is quite rich so for the fatties it may be better to provide meadow hay (also known as grassy hay or pasture hay).
Make sure that teeth are attended to on a yearly basis to ensure the horse is getting the most from their feed and that they are grinding the fibre adequately otherwise if long strands of fibre are not chewed properly this may lead to GIT blockages.
Amount of millet and linseed to feed is 1/4 to 1/2 cup of each per horse twice daily depending on their size.
Please ensure you have a topnotch farrier or barefoot trimmer for your yearling. This will be very important to give him the best chance of returning to normal or as normal as can be expected.

This morning I had an inquiry, reproduced below, from a client for whom I had provided a support program for her dog's cancer last year.

She wrote;

Dear Robert

BTW - my two-year-old grand daughter will shortly undergo surgery for two dislocated hips - which, no doubt, occurred at or within months of birth.

Unfortunately, various health professionals with whom she has come in contact have failed to recognise the problem, even with her 'waddling' gait, and it was not diagnosed until finally we found an observant and knowledgeable paediatrician this week. It is a very bad case with acetabulare dysplastic.

Although I suspect surgical interventions don't particularly lend themselves to herbal remedies, I thought, with your creative approach, you may have a suggestion to help her through.

The procedure [don't know whether they will do both hips in one go or have her back for a second one...ugh!] will mean a week in hospital and then six long weeks immobilised in a body cast.

I think Rescue Remedy could be useful - what do you think?
Do you have any other suggestions?

Regards
Jan

I replied:

Dear Jan,

There is a great deal we can do to protect and support your Granddaughter through her surgery and recovery which will result in minimum shock and side effects and rapid and full rehabilitation and healing.

Firstly:

I prepare all patients going in for operations for the shock of the anaesthetic and the procedure, which although we don't feel anything in our minds our bodies are profoundly shocked and traumatised by the surgery. You can imagine that our body suffers as much as we would, if the procedures were carried out while we were wide-awake.

It is this shock, which depletes our adrenal reserves and our immunity so profoundly, and this in turn is what delays healing and makes us susceptible to infection and complications.

For this reason also, I would strongly recommend that you tried to have both hips done at once, as the single exposure to all of this and the single period of immobilisation, is all that you want to expose this 2 yr old girl to.

To prepare for an operation I provide a mixture consisting of concentrated Rosehips Extract and Rescue Remedy. It is to be given in frequent small doses (5 to 10 drops only), in most of her drinks for the 3 or 4 days before surgery and then starting immediately she is awake after the operation. The sooner the better.

This preparation alone will support the resolution of shock and rebuild her adrenal reserves and Vitamin C levels, which will be decimated by the procedure.

Secondly:

Nowadays also there is a severe risk of catching a hospital based staph infection and I have many patients spending weeks on IV antibiotics trying to recover from such infections. No hospital and no Doctors surgery is safe from this danger now.

This danger is also why in hospital they will want to give your granddaughter very strong prophylactic antibiotics, which will also be very hard on her system.

I protect my patients from hospital based staph infection by giving them Colloidal Silver along with a herb called Thuja before, and immediately after surgery, and this provides an additional layer of protection for her system while she is in hospital and so vulnerable.

The Colloidal Silver, Thuja and Pre Operative treatment may all be given together just mixed in all her drinks and there are no contra indications or side effects and neither are none of them dose sensitive at the doses recommended.

Really and honestly all hospitals should be following all these procedures routinely and by doing so they would dramatically improve the prospects for their patients.

Instead most of them are:
Denying there is a problem.
Worrying about the legal implications if it is proven someone catches an infection.
Burying their head in the sands and hoping medical science will come up with a solution.
Finally:
There is a simple bone healing mix which I make up which will support the post surgical healing and this would be started after surgery and continue during the healing process. Again this will speed up the bone repair and minimise scarring and all the rest and improve the prospects of everything turning out well.

I spent a little time detailing what in fact we can do with the herbs to support the surgery and the healing process and I strongly encourage you to explain all this to your daughter and/or her surgeon, and try to have her follow these suggestions.

I am happy to talk to either or both of them in more detail and you may care to refer them to my website on;

I have been a little long winded about this Jan, but decided that your inquiry would be a good opportunity to lay it all out and maybe use the same explanation as the subject of a newsletter to inform the wider community.

With your permission, and with your personal details changed, I should like to include an extract from your letter as an intro to this topic

Yours truly,
Robert McDowell

On Monday, March 3, 2003, Nancy Morrison emailed Robert:

I have been having recurring sinus infections for several years and headaches to go with the infections.
I have been to several doctors over the years without much help. Antibiotics have not done much to help. Nose is stuffed up often all night long. I also have recurring nose bleeds.Nasal steriod percription sprays help but I cannot tolerate them because of nose bleeds. Any suggestions?

Robert replied:

Dear Nancy,

I make up a specific preparation which will completely resolve this long standing problem for you.

Many people start life with their sinus cavities being their most sensitive and weakest area of their immune system and they constantly react to airborne irritants or develop infections in their sinus cavities. Often it goes back as far as their being weaned onto cows milk at an early age and their system reacting to it by producing thicker than normal mucus as an attempt to get rid of all that excess calcium.

Thickened mucus in poorly drained sinus cavities is an ideal medium to grow bacterial infections and so a pattern of infection and treatment with antibiotics and/or nasal sprays begins.

Each time such an infection develops it irritates and inflames the mucosal linings within the sinuses and each time the antibiotics kill the infection some of the bugs develop an immunity to the antibiotics and all the debris of the dead ones accumulate in the mucous linings and blood vessels serving them. Inevitably the area becomes increasingly inflamed and sensitive and populated by antibiotic resistant infection all in a lovely toxic environment conducive to regular recurrence.

I know this all sounds gross but it is really an inevitable result of the medical mindset which says that if we kill the bugs we cure the patient.

My approach is to provide a herbal program which will deal with all aspects of this situation and within a couple of months you will have almost no symptoms left at all and within 4 to 6 months you will have completely healthy and normal mucosal linings and normal levels of sensitivity and you will be completely cured.

The program is simple and consists of:

1. A 100ml Chronic Sinus mixture of concentrated herbal extracts which will heal the mucosal linings and the blood vessels supporting them, build your body's immunity in that area and generally, and discourage the population of exotic infection and allow your system to clear them both through the blood and lymphatic system as well as through drainage through the nasal cavities. This mixture contains the following herbs; Buchu, Fenugreek, Echinacea, Horseradish, Garlic, Golden Seal and Elecampane. http://herbs_chronic_sinus.html

2. Fenugreek Seeds a teaspoon of which are boiled twice daily, the steam from the seeds are inhaled through the nose and part of the resulting herbal tea formed by boiling drunk after each inhalation.

3. Colloidal Silver which is taken at a dose rate of 20ml twice daily for the first 10 days and then 10ml twice daily along with 5 drops of a herb called Thuja which is added to the silver and a course of this 6 weeks long will completely clear exotic and antibiotic resistant infection from the area.

4. Regular exposure to Rutin which is best found in either Black Currant fruit juice cordial or Buckwheat Flour and which will support the healing of those fragile blood vessel walls which are bleeding during sinus attacks. The most effective way to take the Black Currant Cordial is to add a little to an infusion of Rosehips which has been left to go cold. Rosehips is a common herb tea and a powerful immunity tonic high in both Iron and Vitamin C amongst other things. I call the combination of Rosehips and Black Currant "Rocket Fuel" for the immunity and encourage parents to prepare it for their children in place of commercial cordials, soda drinks and even fruit juice.

As you can see I am dealing with all the aspects of the Chronic Sinus situation and using this approach I can confidently predict a complete resolution of your problems. This is the difference between the Holistic approach and the Medical approach which seeks to kill the bugs (and offer steroids when all else fails) but never addresses either the underlying causes or the resultant damage.

I can provide a 6 weeks course of the 100ml Chronic Sinus for US$65.00 and a 25ml bottle of Thuja Extract for $20.50 and you can source the Colloidal Silver and Fenugreek Seeds separately. Alternatively I can send 500ml of Silver to you and 1/2 Kg of Fenugreek seeds for $30 and $10 respectively. Postage will be at cost and is of course more expensive with the silver and seeds both of which are bulkier than the concentrated extracts.

You may specify any or all of the above on the order form below my signature and I look forward to helping you resolve your Chronic Sinus problems.

Yours truly,
Robert McDowell

I would suggest the nervous rehabilitation mix for your horse.

This mix comes as a 1 litre bottle and is given at a dose rate of 10mls twice a day. It will not make the horse sleepy at all. It actually works to strengthen the nervous system.

Most horses only require 1-2 courses of this mix with perhaps a repeat 12 months down the track.

At home include some chamomile tea in the horse's feed. This is an excellent calmer for horses that are quite gut reactive in their nervousness, e.g. loose manure's, colicky, etc. You could also include some brewers yeast in the feed, which would provide a great Source of B vitamins.

There is also a little homeopathic remedy called Bach Flower's Rescue Remedy.

It is great for shock, fright, panic, etc and is a great addition to the first aid cupboard for humans and animals. It can be given frequently for as long as required.

Should you require more information or have further queries do not hesitate to contact me.

Question:

I have a 8 year old quarter horse gelding with approximately 5 sarcoids on his face. I am somewhat interested in trying your product; however, would like to know what your success rate is and what kind of a time span we are talking about.

Answer:

Herbally I work with the systems of the body giving rise to the condition in the first place.

A sarcoid can be seen as an attempt by the immune system to package up and get rid of impurities within the blood or the waste products following a clash with an infection of some sort.

Therefore, the herbs which I include in a mixture aimed at resolving the problem and facilitating the expulsion of the offending matter are as follows; Echinacea, Mistletoe and Equisetum as three of the most powerful and specific blood cleansers; Elecampane to support the immune system and assist with Equisetum in healing any damage caused by the presence of the Sarcoid insofar as it may have effected ligaments for example; Violet Leaves as a Lymphatic Tonic to further facilitate the cleansing via the lymphatic system and Vervain as a nervous system tonic supporting the whole process.

The program may be used alongside of orthodox surgical or medical procedures although it is very often successful as a stand alone treatment as it addresses the causal factors.

The program for sarcoid's consists of an internal blood cleansing style of treatment in concentrated liquid extract form and an external preparation which is applied directly to the sarcoid itself.

The program is described and may be ordered from my website from the following link;
Herbal Medicine for Sarcoids

Over the years this is proved completely successful in all but a tiny number of cases and I have a policy of following through all my treatments with all my clients so I get regular reports from most of them.

Normally I expect good signs of progress by 3 or 4 weeks when I ask for the first report.

Yours truly,
Robert McDowell

I have been adding 1 tablespoon of Rosehips daily to my horse's feed (without making it into a tea) is this safe to do? and is it safe to give Rosehips to horses long term? I have just discovered my 6yr old Thoroughbred has degenerative joint disease in her hock and I am looking for a herbal treatment that will help her in conjunction with other treatments I'm pursuing. I'm also wondering what are the best herbal sources of Zinc and Copper?

Robert replied-

Rosehips is best soaked in water first and is a good source of copper as well. It is not unsafe to take dry just absorbed more slowly by a horses gut. Consult my bone healing page.

It would be good to start taking some Millet ,Linseed and Elecampane into the horse diet.
