Colic is a disorder in which an infant has episodes of distressed crying and irritability with what appears to be abdominal pain. Colic may occur intermittently during the first 3 or 4 months. However some infants may suffer with it chronically and therefore cry incessantly.
The excessive crying causes the infant to swallow air which results in abdominal swelling and "wind" (flatulence). Colicky babies often suck vigorously, a baby who becomes fussy after a feed may need more opportunity to suck, some also quieten with being swaddled firmly to make them feel more secure .
