Developmental joint issues are generally a genetic issue, which can cause your dog's joints to develop incorrectly. The two of the most common being elbow and hip dysplasia. Some breeds are more likely to develop this.

Degenerative joint issues are more likely to be caused by the wearing down of cartilage or injury to the tendons and ligaments. Osteoarthritis is an example.

Symptoms of joint pain;

  • Overall slowing down
  • Uneven wearing of nails – ie affected leg has longer nails
  • Lack of muscle tone/muscle bulk in affected leg.
  • Limping or lameness
  • Difficulty sitting, standing, or lying down
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irritability or signs of depression
  • Frequent slipping or tripping while moving about
  • Licking, chewing or biting the affected area

Owners don’t always notice mild lameness but these can be signs that are present that can be either noticed or palpated with regards to the muscle bulk/tone.

Another sign might be that the dog is intolerant or snappy towards younger active dogs or boisterous dogs or small children that may inadvertently bump into the dog which can either make physical contact with the affected area OR cause the dog to move quickly thereby causing pain in the affected area.
