Arthritis and Rheumatism in dogs - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

Arthritis affects one in five dogs over the age of seven. It is a painful degenerative inflammatory condition that affects the joints and can occur in your dog's neck, hips, shoulders, elbows and back. It is one of the most common causes of pain, discomfort, lameness and restricted mobility that we treat. Rheumatic and arthritic pain was a feature of mankind's existence since the beginning of time. In every culture there is a wide selection of herbs to address all the different aspects of this sort of pain.

Many older dogs, (just like people) get stiff and sore especially after cold weather or after exercising. In an older farm dog for example, this is likely due to wear and tear or injury during their working lives. In a younger companion animal, it is more likely to be the result of a diet lacking in raw bones and inappropriate exercise patterns while very young.

In people Rheumatoid Arthritis is seen by medical science as being passed down the female line as an autoimmune blood disease, often with an onset in middle of menopause. Science has identified the processes involved in Rheumatoid Arthritis as resulting from an excess of iron in the body which burns out the synovial fluid thereby reducing the lubrication available in the joints. The inflammation results ultimately in damage to the joints themselves and severe pain until finally the joints seize up and are no longer painful.

Holistic Medicine sees Rheumatoid Arthritis as a blood toxicity problem, the predisposition for which is certainly genetic. However, we don't have to travel this path and a healthy diet and healthy fluid intake (plenty of Rosehips Tea is particularly helpful) is one aspect of ensuring that you don't follow your parents into Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Many of these Herbs, like White Willow and Turmeric (Curcumin), having been recorded as being used by the ancient Chinese Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Indian Civilisations. Animal Botanical Mobility formulation contains some of the most reliable and traditionally used pain relieving herbs, in an easy to administer feed supplement. The dog will show an improvement in mobility and comfort with continued use.
