Paralysis ticks are on the move...they were only found as far as North Sydney but they can be now found as far south as the Snowy Mountains in Victoria and even rumoured to be in Tasmania! Like other disease-transmitting insects, ticks are becoming more prevalent...
There are more than 800 species of ticks around the world, with 70 found in Australia. The most important tick in Australia is the Paralysis Tick, Ixodes holocyclus, and over 95% of tick bites in Eastern Australia are due to this species. Most tick-borne illnesses are due to this species (2). There are more ticks around Brisbane and further north as well, due to warmer, wetter summers (1).
The Paralysis Tick will crawl up the stems of grasses or along branches and then will latch on to a passing animal, including humans (2).
The most common symptoms include;
- Arthritis affecting more than one joint
- Joints are painful, warm and swollen.
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Swollen lymph glands.
- Generally, the only sign you will see in your dog is that it is reluctant to move.
The disease can vary from acute to chronic depending on the dogs immune system.
The way out of it all is simple. Address the fundamentals of the immune system and the metabolic harmony which have lost direction. Support the organs and processes of elimination and the whole situation can begin to rebalance itself. If the dogs immune system is not effective then chronic symptoms will begin to show such as anemia, eye problems and bleeding episodes.
There is a great deal we can do for Tick Bite Disease and for the history which went back all the way to the original blood poisoning incident. The fundamental problem can be summarized as a toxic shock to the metabolism from which the system has never fully recovered.
Tips for removing ticks;
- Use only fine tipped forceps
- Do not squeeze the body of the tick
- Don’t use matches or pins because they will irritate the tick and make it harder to completely remove
- Avoid scratching and picking at the tick
- Do not use chemicals like methylated spirits or kerosene.
