It was identified as an antiseptic by the New South Wales chief chemist in the 1920s. It is know being documented in numerous medical studies to kill many strains of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Tea tree oil is one of Australia’s most studied essential oils (1).  

A most promising new function of tea tree oil is countering methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), also called a hospital super bug or golden staph. The spread of MRSA is an important infection control problem in hospitals worldwide as MRSA infections are resistant to most conventional antibiotics, except vancomycin (2).

Research at UWA has shown that tea tree oil has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and anti-cancer effects. Laboratory studies are ongoing and some clinical work has begun. Click here to read more

Tea tree Oil or Cream is a wonderful little remedy to always have on hand for a multiple of uses. It is best not to be ingested orally.

Where can you use it?

It is effective against head lice, acne (5% in cream or gel), tinea (10% essential oil in cream base), toenail infections (needs 100% essential oil), gingivitis (-2.5% gel ), dandruff (5% in shampoo) , dermatitis and vaginitis (diluted emuslsfied solution).

Tea tree oil is also effective for treating insect bites, boils and minor wounds. It has also been known to help soothe sunburns, poison ivy, ear infections, and bee stings. 

Around the home...

Think about this powerful oil and how you could use it around the home! It is an excellent oil for cleaning (try making your own low cost, environmentally friendly cleaning products) and the oil kills mold spores. It is a good insect repellant, great for smelly shoes and laundry freshener (try a few drops in the rinse to keep towells fresh!)
