After a week away at a clinic with my stallion Remi, I came home to find my young mare, Diosa, with what looked like only a mild wrap wire injury. I moved her and went about observing her over the following week.
To my horror, what I thought was mild turned out to be a major injury as devitalised tissue began to die off and recede back to reveal the bone.
Even worse was about 3 weeks into the initial treatment I noticed this white bubble appearing which was a digital flexor tendon decomposing.
I had my vet (Amy from Stewart St Vets) debride the wound surgically and remove all the decaying tissue so healing could really begin.
After 9 weeks she is now back out in the field with a paddock mate, still bandaged but she is now almost healed.
See the video sequence for her story and progress.
Products used:
Tendon and bone , Alleviate, Infect-a-clear, Colloidal silver internally.
Externally :
Wound recover, Manuka Honey , propolis, greasy heel ointment to pack the wound
To deal with proud flesh:
Debriding, pressure bandage, greasy heel ointment
To deal with excess scaring
Red Light Therapy, derma -pred to keep the proud flesh down.
I did have to give her antibiotics because the decaying tendon caused an infection that needed addressing quickly.
This is 8 months after injury.
