Rescue Remedy Applied to a Panic Induced Colic Situation - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

An excellent example of the utility of Bach Flower Rescue Remedy was provided by one of my clients this morning and I have included her question and my response to demonstrate the value of this amazing homeopathic treatment.

Sandy Wrote:

I have an 11year old thoroughbred gelding that gets colic if he touches the electric fence accidentally.

He gets panicked and if not caught will gallop about in great distress.

The colic is spasmodic and I am usually able to calm him by walking him and talking in a soothing voice. The problem can take up to a couple of hours before he is really settled down again.

This is not a daily occurrence but has happened about 6 times in the last two years and most times I have managed without veterinary assistance but have had to call a vet when the episode wasn't caught in time.

My question to you is - would something like rescue remedy be helpful in situations like this? I thank you for your time and would very much appreciate any help you could give me on this problem.

I replied:

Dear Sandy,

Rescue Remedy could have been made for precisely the circumstances you describe.

Let me explain:

Dr Bach in the 1030's, who formulated the Bach Flowers essences, matched the energy signatures of specific emotional states to the homeopathic formulations which he found and which neutralized these energies.

The components in Rescue Remedy are:

Cherry Plum: For a collapse of mental control endangering self and others.

Clematis: For a gap in attention when the mind becomes unfocussed.

Impatiens: For overly hasty response to a situation and difficulty in containing the need to do something.

Rock Rose: For extreme fear, terror, panic.

Star of Bethlehem: For sudden heart stopping trauma.

It was by analyzing these elements, involved in shock, which Dr Bach made a major contribution to treatment of shock.

Shock is such a crucial component in so many health situations from post operative recovery to stroke, heart attack and nervous breakdown and Rescue Remedy is so effective, that it is quite incredible it is not used routinely in first aid and in hospitals considering it has been around for nearly 70 years.

The case you describe of your horse's reaction to electric fence shocks "panicking and galloping about in great distress" is a classic blend of all of the above.

These reactions, in the case of your horse, translate through the metabolism into Colic, which can be seen as metabolic manifestation of shock.

I have written this response to your question a little more formally as I would like with your permission to include your inquiry and my explanation as a testimonial on my website to illustrate the value of Rescue Remedy which, as I said, could have been made for the situation you describe.

The only additional recommendation I would make to you is that you give Chamomile Tea regularly to your horse to calm the parasympathetic nervous system which is the system, which when panicked, can result in Colic.

Giving Rescue Remedy regularly for all shocks large and small up to an including the brush with the electric fence and providing Chamomile Flowers or Chamomile Tea in the feed every few days should minimize the chance of any such reaction in the future.

The same recommendations, given in frequent small frequent doses immediately upon coming upon your horse in such a state, are the very best first aid you could give.

Carry Rescue Remedy with you at all times.
