"Back in July 2013 our little cross Shit-su/Lasa Apso/Terrier dog Sophie, was diagnosed with elevated liver enzymes. At the time, she was almost 14 years old (born October, 2009) but needed to have a cancerous lump removed so an operation was a necessity. Her liver was thankfully still strong enough to withstand the anaesthetic and she was ok as the lump was “low grade” so she needed no chemo follow up.
I told our vet that I was a great believer in liver tonics having researched their effacy for humans with liver issues (especially Milk Thistle). I myself did not as such have a liver issue but have always thoroughly enjoyed my bubbly wine so I have taken a good liver supplement for many, many years.
The vet was not convinced but I researched the web and found McDowell’s Herbal Formula Liver Tonic for Dogs. After a couple of months, Sophie’s liver was re-tested and her enzymes had returned to almost normal.
Recently, Sophie needed to her teeth done under an operation. Being 15 and ½ years old, the vet gave her another liver test to see is she could withstand the operation. Her most important enzyme had shot up from normal of 99 to 1000! I just could not understand what had happened until I quizzed my husband. He had not been putting her tonic in her food for quite a while as he thought it was a little old. We had also been on holidays and the house sitters probably did not put it in either. (I had purchased a new bottle months before and he did not realise it was in the cupboard). She was immediately put back on the tonic and within 3 months her liver enzymes were down from the 1000 to just over 100. A remarkable result for an old doggie! The Vet was extremely impressed once more.
She had had her teeth done, went through the whole procedure with very little drama and is doing great for an old lady! We love her dearly and are so grateful to McDowell’s for their excellent medication.
