"I had a German Shepherd who came to me as a 4 month old puppy who had been abused and starved, about 15 years ago. She was in a severe state of malnutrition and was stunted and skeletal. I put her on a meal plan at the advice of a vet which helped a little but she struggled to gain weight. By chance, I went to a pet shop with my dog simply intending to get her a toy and the owner had the "Give a dog a bone" book. He also sold ready made packs of the recipes at his shop which he made up himself.
Fifteen years ago this thinking was considered a bit radical at the time, he was a bit preachy but I decided to give it a go!
They made up special packs for my dog as she was the only case he had where the dog needed and had difficulty with weight gain.
I was amazed at the turnaround - within a very short time my dog was at an ideal weight for her size! Sadly he went out of business and I got complacent, and gradually switched to commercial dog food, which was fine for a while but when she got older her digestive problems reoccurred and she was unable to process the commercial food. Once again I returned to the raw food principal and again had great success, my dog lived to a great old age and passed away a couple of years ago.
I have just bought a new puppy, I will be picking her up on the weekend. This time I have decided to use the BARF principal from the start."
