In 2003 my almost 3yr old cat Trinity was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. She wasn't a serious case, but she was prescribed medication in order to prevent her from possibly progressing into a serious case.
The first medication that Trinity was prescribed was a timed release, once a day tablet. This particular medication is one that is naturally bitter and since it was a timed release formula it could not be crushed or otherwise altered for administration. Within a week or so of being on that medication, Trinity had started eating less. She seemed to have a heightened "gag reflex" and she had some occasional vomiting. These were side effects associated with the medication
The Dr. decided to lower her dosage and we went to a liquid formulation which had to be administered three times a day. Although it did come in a variety of flavors, that method did not end up working either. So, we went back to a pill, which also had to be administered three times a day. This worked for a while, but Trinity got tired of being caught for a pill three times a day. The pills were small enough that she learned she could hide them in her mouth and then go spit them out. While this pill could be crushed and mixed with something, she could always smell it and most certainly taste the bitterness. The smallest taste was enough to send her running.
Finally, she was prescribed another once a day timed release capsule formula. After some time the struggles began all over again and Trinity would run away and hide any time that she thought I might try to give her a pill. I felt like I was torturing her by trying to help her. I thought there had to be a better way.
I noticed some herbal mixtures where I get her food and I looked through those to see what varieties were available. Not knowing anything about the herbal remedies, I decided to do some research. That's when I found Dr. McDowell's Herbal Treatments and the Heart Tonic was exactly what I was hoping to find.
That was over one year ago now. Trinity loves it and most of the time she can't wait to eat her food "seasoned" with the herbs. It's non invasive and so much easier and more convenient for both of us.
Earlier this year I had a test done on her that indicated that her heart is fine.
