My dog is afraid of thunderstorms, what should I do? - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

"My dog, normally very placid and quiet, becomes maniacal in a storm, running up and down the fence line alert to every tiny glimmer of lightening on the horizon. She cannot be calmed or reassured by anything I try, she is not even aware of my presence or voice, my normally loyal and devoted dog has completely been taken over by the effect of the storm. Even if I bring her inside she cries loudly and paws at the door. Please help me!"

This desperate plea is not that uncommon among dog owners who have similar problems with their pets in storms and fireworks. In my home town this last weekend the local dog pound has reported that they have many lost and distraught dogs at the moment after the recent "24 hour" car races with accompaning fireworks and a spate of storms over the last week.

Actually storms may induce a whole range of effects on your dog including the opposite in sending them cowering to hide under the bed whimpering in fear. There are a combination of emotions at work when your dog is hyperactive or hypoactive for what ever reasons- apprehension, impatience, fear, insecurity, even near loss of control, certainly the adrenaline is pumping and the concentration is scattered.

The Relax formulation is designed to nourish and restore the nervous system of a dog that is so stressed or nervy as to be its own worst enemy. This formulation has been regularly fed to clients dogs over a 20 year period in our clinic, offering support for many owners and trainers alike.

Retraining your dog to react differently in stressful situations will break the habit but is a great deal simpler if accompanied by nervous system tonics that help to relax your dog so that he is able to respond better to training.

Relax formula is given initially 3 doses per day and then reduced to 2 or 1 per day as the behaviour improves. The size of the single dose is then reduced slowly to find the minimum dose that maintains the dog in a calm and reasonable frame of mind.

Animal Botanical™ Relax formulation contains some of the most reliable and traditionally used herbs for reducing physical nervous tension and anxiety. A course of this treatment will strengthen the system and allow your dog to be a great deal calmer.

The mix is in no way a drug nor a doping agent. It is all natural and as I stated before,
