Colloidal silver consists of tiny silver particles suspended in liquid, usually distilled water. Colloidal Silver was used and proven to be effective against hundreds of disease-causing bacterium by the 1940s. Its action as a broad spectrum antibiotic has never been matched by the modern pharmaceuticals, in that it produces no drug resistance whatsoever.
Now that modern antibiotics are becoming more resistant, silver is our very best option. James Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University, has shown how silver can disrupt bacteria, and how that the ancient treatment could help to deal with the thoroughly modern problem of antibiotic resistance. They found that silver — in colloidal form - attacked bacterial cells by making the cell membrane more permeable, and interfering with the cell’s metabolism (1).
Scientists at the Wuhan Polytechnic University observed that colloidal silver caused damage to the cell walls of cultured bacterial strains such as Salmonella, e. Coli and others. The “pits” on the outer covering weakened the cells and led to bacterial cell death (2).
Topical silver (used on the skin) is applied in hospitals in bandages and dressings to treat burns, skin wounds, or skin infections. It’s also been used in medicines to prevent conjunctivitis (an eye condition) in newborns.
In a test tube study, where several strains of bacteria, fungi, and viruses were grown under multicycle growth conditions, colloidal silver acted like a broad-spectrum antibiotic and it was anti-fungal against certain strains (3).
Silver is completely safe to take, has no side effects and is cheap and simple to produce. McDowells Herbal often recommend that Silver is best used in conjunction with other herbal treatments which support the immunity and the elimination required to completely resolve the brush with infection.
Colloidal silver can be used in conjunction with the herb Thuja, to recover from or prevent people from contracting hospital based antibiotic resistant infections such as Golden Staph.

Note: Colloidal silver can cause serious side effects if excess amounts are taken internally. Argyria, an extremely rare (there are very few actualy cases) bluish-gray discoloration of the skin, which is usually permanent. Silver can build up in the body’s tissue, causing a bluish-gray discoloration of large areas of skin, especially those exposed to the sun.
