Bed Sores Herbal Support - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

Bed Sores or pressure sores are skin damage from lack of blood flow or irritation over a bony projection from a bed, wheel chair or cast etc.

If skin circulation is cut off for more than a couple of hours the skin will die . Uaually movement and or a layer of protective fat prevents blood circulation being cut off. Therefore old, paralyzed, weak, restrained people or those unable to sense that this is happening as in those with some nerve damage are more at risk of this problem.

The first symptoms are redness, inflammation and pain, then blisters appear and skin begins to die, once this happens then infection can start to be a problem leading to severe life threatening conditions .

Even rough clothing or prolonged exposure to dampness can cause irritation . At their worst bed sores can expose muscle and even bone.

Bed sores and ulcers all benefit from some stimulation to circulation and they will never heal effectively if the circulation is not addressed.

Massage, exercise and dealing with pressure points are important.

Herbally I make up a very effective circulation tonic for older folk and I find this dramatically improves the healing of leg ulcers.

You could improve the situation also by drinking two or three cups per day made from cold Rosehips Tea to which some black currant fruit juice cordial has been added.

Topically here are a number of options

  • Paw Paw base to which some elecampane and calendula have been added is very soothing and healing.
  • Wheatgrass Skin Recovery Spray is very helpful
  • Skin Irritant cream is one I make with a mix of herbs to heal damaged skin
