Dogs Eating Dirt - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

I've had my border collies on many of your herbal remedies with great success. I have a question for you that I can't seem to get a conclusive answer anywhere. Why do dogs eat dirt? In your experience, is it something lacking in their diet? I ask this because a number of my dogs eat dirt regularly.

Normally they are looking for trace material which can either be elements or bacteria to aid with their digestion.

A small amount of powdered kelp will normally sort out exotic mineral needs. Burying a bone and eating it later will normally sort out the bacterial problems in our too clean world.
