I acquired Monty, a 2yr old shetty x in December when I went to look at this full, younger brother as a companion pony for my mare. We were offered Monty as a giveaway because he was blind and couldn't be sold (an injury sustained at his birth). He and his brother Casper were also very close. I ended up taking both.
After he had settled in, I got my vet out to assess his eyes and Monty was diagnosed with Uveitis. His retinas are very badly damaged for such a young horse and he has limited vision. His eyes bulged out and they wept almost constantly.
We were prescribed Prednisone drops which helped clear up the discharge from his eyes.I came across the McDowells Uveitis eye wash while searching online and ordered a bottle.
Initially I just used it to clean around Monty's eyes before using the prednisone drops. This combination worked well. As I began to use less of the medication, I tried using the eyewash only. I started mixing the recommended dosage of the herbal treatment with colloidal silver solution and putting it in an eye drop bottle and flushing Monty's eyes out daily.
This not only kept his condition at bay but he began to improve!
His eyes became noticeably less popped out and the watering/discharge was greatly reduced. I found I could go longer between washing his eyes and over winter this year I have barely had to do anything.
Coming back into summer I am back to regular flushing but ONE EYE ONLY! His nearside eye now sits into his head like a normal horse and it never gets weepy. This used to be his bad eye! With some more dedication, I hope I can get the offside eye looking just as good.
I can't do anything to get his vision back but he is a bold, happy, active (mischievous!) little man and he copes with his blindness well. That initial bottle of eye wash lasted nearly 2 years of frequent use, it has saved me a small fortune in medication and even better - it is natural.
