Osteosarcoma and Bone Cancer Support for Dogs - McDowell's Herbal Treatments

Osteosarcoma is one of the most common canine cancers. It has risen from being almost unknown 50 years ago to epidemic proportions nowadays. It is now affecting younger and younger dogs especially those of the bigger breeds. Why this has occurred is open to debate...

Many professionals (alternative and orthodox Veterinarians) believe that human intervention in and changes to natural breeding and raising, over vaccination, diet and feeding practices as well as exercise patterns have contributed to the surge in canine Osteosarcoma.

Dietary impact

Dogs systems are now called upon to digest far too much processed food since the advent of commercial dog feed in the 1950's. Also, their eating patterns have been subverted by over feeding so as to deny the long periods of fasting which they previously experienced in nature and which allowed their metabolism to clear toxins.

In addition the domesticated dog is almost never allowed to bury and retrieve a bone and many never have raw meat in their diet at all. This change in diet and feeding practice after almost 5000 years living with humans can be seen as sudden and detrimental to canine health.

Breeding and genetics

Additionally, there is an argument that inbreeding in certain species has set up a situation where both impaired immunity and a reduced gene pool in so called ‘pure breed’ dogs make them dangerously susceptible to illness and congenital disease.

We find that, on the whole, the people who approach us for Osteosarcoma cancer support are often the most caring of owners and many of them have been trying to do the right thing by their dogs and some are not even guilty of any of the problems canvassed above. Despite that they face the same awful dilemmas that all pet owners face when they hear and read the diagnosis of 'cancer'.

McDowells Products

The Osteosarcoma Program contains four products that work together with the aim to slow down and reverse the development of the Osteosarcoma, bringing it into remission. The important distinction between our herbal approach and that of traditional medicine is that; here we are aiming to boost the robust health maintenance and disease fighting systems already at work in every dog, not just remove or kill cancerous cells – hoping they don’t return.

Osteosarcoma Cancer Support Mix
Elecampane and Equisetum are both in the mix, providing the healing impetus to stimulate a return to normal bone tissue. Elecampane as a specific bone healing herb, and as a source of allantoin and Vitamin B12, to normalize and speed up repair. Equisetum, as a very high organic silica source to support normal bone growth and to support elimination from bony structures and from the blood.

Yarrow is included as a nervous system tonic, a high iron tonic, an astringent, and as the primary bone marrow tonic, supporting healthy functioning of this tissue throughout the body.

Parsley and Rosehips are included, which between them support the core nervous system energy through the spinal cord and what I call the top end of the immune system, through the Iron, Vitamin C, Copper and Cobalt in the Rosehips. Parsley, in life threatening situations, is able to tap into the physical and nervous system vitality required to "live to fight another day" and contains useful amounts of many minerals besides. Rosehips works as a blood, kidney and liver tonic and assists in the elimination through these systems.

Kelp is included as a source of all trace elements and therefore, if there are individual trace elements involved in the process of cancer in any particular case, can supply these traces. Kelp also supports thyroid function and assists it in re-balancing and tuning up metabolic systems and balance in general.

Golden Seal is included in this particular mixture, primarily to support the health of mucosal tissues, which line the sinus cavities. It also has some anti cancer properties of its own. It is included as a very small component for the reasons given above and is a good illustration of "appropriate dosing" rather than the opposite of "too much of a good thing" which often becomes a bad thing.

Maritime Pine Bark
This mix is given in conjunction with a powerful antioxidant extract derived from the bark of the Maritime Pine Tree, or Maritime Pine Bark Extract. Together the two support mixes have the potential to slow the growth of the cancer and boost overall health. In addition they can assist in healing localized irritation and inflammation which may have resulted from the cancer.

Conditioning Mix
The Conditioning Mix is my primary rehabilitation tonic for dogs suffering critical metabolic stress resulting from over-medication, digestive problems, liver damage, poisoning, severe trauma, major illness or surgery.

Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver is used and proven to be effective against hundreds of disease-causing bacterium by the 1940s. Its action as a broad spectrum antibiotic has never been matched by the modern pharmaceuticals in that it produces no drug resistance whatsoever.
